Private and public transportation are among the major contributors to the increased volume of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In fact, in the U.S., cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of global emissions. Major industrial countries such as China, for example, are also some of the most trenchant producers of greenhouse gases.

As more UN member-countries are joining the campaign, car owners and car manufacturers are also heeding the call by promoting electric cars. Running on electricity, electric cars produce virtually zero emissions compared to those running on fossil fuels.

A recent study conducted by a group of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that electric cars can already support a driver’s requirements by as much as 87 percent. Most electric grids are also capable of supporting the demand of these types of cars. With the availability of renewable sources of energy, charging electric cars is already cost effective and benign to the environment.

In instances where electric cars can’t operate, Professor Jessica Trancik, the leader of the study, said that there is still a need for better car-sharing services or advancements in other environment-friendly cars that could fill the shortcomings of electric vehicles.

Depending on the type and model of the car, these vehicles will only need to be plugged in once a day to recharge. Consumers can meet their needs for affordable mileage while lessening their carbon footprint.
